his guide was prepared to assist University of the Gambia (UTG) staff and students to find relevant information to support their learning, research and teaching. The guide lists electronic journal databases, subject gateways and other useful web resources that allow you to search for specific topics or articles. It is not an exhaustive list but it attempts to identify some of the most valuable resources available, most of which are free services.

AJOL is the world’s largest online collection of African-published, peer-reviewed scholarly journals. These journals cover the full range of academic disciplines including sections on health, education, agriculture, science and technology, the environment, and arts and culture. The journals can be listed by subject area, country, or alphabetically. The email alerts also provide a reminder service, to alert users to newly-published issues from their selected titles.

BUBL Link is a catalogue of Internet resources covering all academic subject areas. It is organized according to the Dewey Decimal Classification system,

ChemSynthesis is a freely accessible database of chemicals. The resource contains substances with their synthesis references and physical properties, such as melting point, boiling point and density. There are currently over 40,000 compounds and synthesis references listed in the database.
Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)

The Directory of Open Access Journals service covers free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals. DOAJ aims to cover all subjects and languages. Currently 1224 journals are searchable at article level.

PubMed is a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine. It includes citations from MEDLINE and other life science journals for biomedical articles dating back to the 1950s. PubMed includes links to full text articles and other related resources.

Online Access to Research in the Environment (OARE) is an international public-private consortium coordinated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Yale University, and leading science and technology publishers. OAIster is a union catalog of digital resources. The database can be searched by title, author/creator, subject, language or entire record. Searches can also be limited by resource type (text, image, audio, video, dataset) and sorted by title, author, date and hit frequency. The search results allow further limiting by data contributor.
