Upcoming Programs
BSc Accounting and Finance: due to a lack of highly trained personnel in the areas of Accounting and Finance, the department has deemed it fit to start a degree program in accounting and Finance. People (especially those in the private sector) have shown interest in the program. It is expected that the program will start in the 2008/09 academic year.
BSc Marketing: the department currently offers a minor in Marketing. It is expected that students will be able to major in Marketing starting from next semester, pending Senate Approval.
Association of Business Executives (ABE): the Department is currently considering collaborating with Association of Business Executives to offer courses in Business Management, Business Information Systems and Human Resource Management. These courses are at the levels of Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma. A course option in Islamic Economics and Islamic Finance is also under consideration.
Internet Connection: in order to address the problems faced by the students in our department, the department in collaboration with ECOMANSA is working on a means to open up an internet café at the library premises. This will allow students to access the net without having to go all the way to Admin just to find out if they will be able to access the net.
Research and Consultancies
During the past year the department has been involved in a number or consultancies and research.
AERC Scoping Study: this was a study done by the Department for AERC on the trade relations between Africa and China. The Gambia was among the countries chosen for the study and the department was given the task.
IFAD: the Department conducted an Impact Assessment Study for IFAD on its RFCIP project.
Economic Commission for Africa (ECA): the Department did a study for ECA about Good Governance in the Public Sector. Areas looked at included Institutional Capacity Building and Corporate Governance.
CUTS: a study on the services sector in the Gambia with emphasis on liberalization in the services industry was done for CUTS during the third quarter of last year. The findings of this study were presented at the University Seminar in December 2007.
National Association of Cooperative Credit Unions of The Gambia (NACCUG): a study of the needs of microfinance associations in the Gambia was done by the Department for NACCUG. The study was funded by Concern Universal.
Seminars
In December of 2007, Dr. Sillah and Mr Jammeh presented their findings on the Sectoral Analysis study of the Educational Services Sector at the fortnightly University Seminar at the Girls Guide Hall.
